Description:
30-06 SPRG; very good+ bore, good stock, 24'' barrel, Early Springfield ex-gas trap M1 rifle, receiver manufactured c.June 1938-September 1939. As most of the "gas trap" M1 rifles were, this example was reworked to a gas port rifle with an SA 3-42 barrel, stamped upside down. Receiver is marked on the leg D 28291. Retains some original parts. Op-rod marked D35382 2 SA with small relief cut, with a Keystone square wire spring and 2nd type follower rod w/ square wire spring. The bolt is marked D 28287 with the hand stamped -1 and J6 heat lot. Trigger housing marked D 28290, milled trigger guard C 46025, hammer marked on the right side C 46008-1 with hole, safety C 46015-4. Receiver components: rear sight cover B8872, late flat bottom base, sight aperture B8868-1, windage knob with serrated edge open arrows and single slot spanner screw, elevation knob with checkered edge and open arrows. Bullet guide marked B-8875. Follower marked with the number 5. Follower arm marked B8869. Walnut stock with boxed SA/SHM and ordnance wheel. Circled black letter P firing proof on the front of the grip. Stock has the holes for the oiler/cleaning rods in the butt, but is fitted with a smooth buttplate having no trap door. Grooved lower handguard band. Lower band is grooved , unmarked, with the machined out bottom corners. Solid retaining pin. Front sight has the plug. Single slot cylinder lock. Overall condition is very good, thinning finish on the receiver and some small parts. The wood has scattered dings and scuffs. The bore is bright, muzzle=.302, TE=2. This particular rifle was a CMP auction gun and comes with the CMP certificate and copy of photos from the original auction., s/n 49xx
