| 52 Caliber; fair bore, good stock, 21.5'' barrel, Later manufacture Model 1853 "slant breech" carbine serial number 23198, with no military markings. Metal is bright. Walnut stock. Brass mounted with buttplate, patchbox and barrel band. 3" saddle ring bar on left side. Round barrel with fixed front sight, ladder rear sight graduated 200-800 yards on the leaf. Marked on top of the base "R.S. LAWRENCE". Stamped on top of the barrel just forward of the rear sight "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO / HARTFORD CONN.". The lockplate is marked "SHARPS/PATENT/1852", and the top of the upper tang is marked "SHARPS/PATENT./1848". Barrel is stamped on the left side at the frame with a "T". Action functions well. 6 groove bore has some dark spots of pitting. Wood shows its age however is overall in good condition. A previous owners initials are lightly visible on the left side of the stock upside down "JW". Antique, s/n 231xx |
