Brass mounted European walnut stock has dings dents and bruising overall, with a tight crack on the left flat between the barrel and rear lock screw brass plate. Metal has turned a dark rust patina with sruface corrosion and substantial pitting aorund the bolster and barrel breech end up to rear sight base. Missing the ramrod. And the upper barrel band has been replaced with a US "U" marked band. The lock functions however the hammer notches seem worn. Bore is dark and rusted but strong 3 groove rifling is visible. Confederate use possibly? It is well known that the firm of J.E. Barnett & Sons and their contractors were major suppliers of British arms of many types to the Confederacy. This rifle musket came from an 80 year old collection in south western Illinois near the Missouri border. Antique |
