| From a Harrisburg, PA museum that was liquidated. C.1800's vintage hand forged slate hammer. Tools such as this were used for laying clay and slate roofing, common in England and Europe as well as other parts of the world since the 12th century, and in North America into the 1800's. The knife edged handle, used for cutting the tiles, is approx 12 inches long, the head about 8 1/2 inches in length. The handle is comprised of leather washers. |
