| The present book is dedicated to the history of the Swiss Army ordonnance firearms with a rear loading system. This means that the book deals with the "more modern" guns from 1866 onwards. This marked the beginning of the era of rifles that were loaded from behind with metallic cartridges. It was a historically significant step away from the rather impractical muzzle-loaders to modern firearms. The head of the DDPS is delighted to be able to state that Switzerland had by far the best army weapons at that time. The author Ernst Grenacher has succeeded in presenting the history of the Swiss soldier's weapons, which has spanned more than 130 years, in a clear form. In more than 50 years Grenacher has systematically and persistently built up a collection of weapons that is unique in its kind and that is unparalleled nationally and internationally. Due to his extensive studies, over the years he has acquired extensive knowledge of the Swiss weapon development over the past 150 years. The fact that the weapons are all reproduced in color and in high resolution should make the present work of lasting value and a valuable reference work. |
