The Daniel Defense DD4 RIII embodies the new Daniel Defense 16" AR-15 standard : it combines the manufacturer’s operational legitimacy — over 15,000 MK18 in service with US special forces — with the major advances of the RIII generation. Two innovations set it apart : a proprietary fully ambidextrous lower receiver (bolt catch, safety and magazine release accessible from both sides) and the new RIS III 12.5" M-LOK handguard. On a 16" mid-length barrel, the DD4 RIII offers the optimal balance between accuracy, mild recoil, modern ergonomics and Swiss legal versatility.

The RIII (Rail Interface System III) platform represents the major evolution of the Daniel Defense lineup. It integrates two structural advances that transform the shooting experience :

• Proprietary fully ambidextrous lower receiver — bolt catch, magazine release and safety selector accessible from both sides. The shooter never leaves the pistol grip.
• RIS III M-LOK handguard — next generation of the legendary SOCOM RIS II. Lighter, slimmer, more ergonomic, while retaining the patented 6-Bolt Bolt-Up System that built the RIS II reputation.

The 16" barrel with mid-length gas system is the reference configuration for the versatile AR-15 :

• Legal length in Switzerland without exceptional permit — unlike 10.3" SBRs (MK18) which require a special authorization, the DD4 RIII 16" is acquired with the standard PAA permit.
• Mid-length gas system — softer recoil, more consistent shooting, controlled cadence, reduced wear. The go-to configuration for sport shooters and modern patrol rifle.
• Optimal accuracy at medium range — the 16" barrel fully exploits 5.56 NATO ballistics up to 400 m.
• Extended service life — mid-length gas reduces BCG stress compared to carbine gas.

• M-LOK instead of Picatinny quad rail — drastically lighter, slimmer.
• Patented 6-Bolt Bolt-Up System — inherited from SOCOM RIS II.
• Two-piece free-float design — removable lower section (M203 compatible).
• Integrated flush QD points on both sides near the receiver.
• Continuous 1913 top rail for full optic stacking.
• 12.5" length — optimal coverage for modern C-clamp grip with hand-stop and vertical foregrip.

• Ambidextrous bolt catch — lock and release without leaving the pistol grip.
• Ambidextrous magazine release — ultra-fast reloads without breaking the shooting grip.
• Ambidextrous safety selector — both-sided control.

Both rifles share the RIII platform (ambidextrous proprietary lower, RIS III M-LOK rail, Bolt-Up System). They differ on three axes: barrel length (DD4 RIII = 16" mid-length, MK18 RIII = 10.3" carbine SBR), Swiss legal framework (DD4 RIII 16" = standard PAA, MK18 RIII 10.3" = SBR requiring exceptional authorization), main use (DD4 RIII = sport shooting, patrol, medium-range accuracy; MK18 RIII = CQB, dynamic shooting, ultra-compact suppressor platform). The DD4 RIII 16" is the logical choice for most Swiss sport shooters: it delivers all the RIII DNA without the SBR constraints.
