Das Modell 686 könnte mit seinem widerstandsfähigeren L-Rahmen und seinem über die gesamte Länge verstärkten schweren Lauf als Weiterentwicklung des Modells 66 "Kampfmagnum" angesehen werden. Der vorgestellte Revolver wurde 1989 nach dem Buch "The Standard Catalog of S&W" hergestellt. Der Revolver hat ein standardmäßiges, mattes Edelstahl-Finish, ein verstellbares Visier, einen 2,5-Zoll-Lauf, einen kompakteren Rundschaftgriff und Holzplatten im Kampfstil von Nill Griffe (Originalgummigriff erhältlich).
