Das Ziel von Beretta war es, eine Schrotflinte zu produzieren, die zuverlässig 2¾ "beladen mit leichten Ziellasten durch die 3½" Super-Magnum-Runde geladen werden konnte. Das Xtrema2 hatte mehrere Funktionen, die die Genauigkeit und Zuverlässigkeit erhöhen sollten. Zum einen beschloss Beretta, so viele O-Ringe und Federn wie möglich zu entfernen, um eine geringere Verschleißwahrscheinlichkeit zu erreichen, und es sollte auch einfacher sein, die Waffe ohne den zufälligen Verlust von Teilen abzutragen. Es arbeitet mit einer gasbetriebenen Aktion anstelle einer trägheitsgesteuerten Aktion. Ein weiterer Vorteil liegt in der überbohrten Laufkonstruktion, die den Mündungssprung reduziert und auch Schussmuster verbessert. Eine spezielle Oberfläche schützt die Waffe bei rauen Jagdbedingungen wie z. B. bei der Jagd auf Wassergeflügel.
