DEUTSCHE AUSHILFSSEITENGEWEHRE 1914 - 1918

Christian Méry

World War I, which was initially planned by the rulers and military leaders as a short and decisive campaign that would end within a few months, was destined to develop into a war of annihilation lasting more than four years.

The loss of human life was enormous and the need for weapons, ammunition, and equipment exceeded all expectations. The capacities of the armaments industry were insufficient in virtually all areas - including the production of sidearms, which were needed for equipping newly formed units as well as replacing war losses.

To overcome the shortages in bayonets, an almost unmanageable quantity of so-called "auxiliary sidearms" was procured. These were extremely simplified blades in production; bayonets stored at wholesalers for export that were modified for German rifles; captured stocks or adapted older models that were still in depots.

Christian Méry presents 300 different auxiliary rifles in his book, explaining their details with more than 850 color photos and showing the carrying and use of bayonets based on a unique collection of over 230 contemporary black-and-white photos.
