Ab 1979 wurde für den Biathlonsport das Kleinkalibergewehr, ein Patronenrandzünder im Kaliber .22 l.r. (5,6 mm) vorgeschrieben, ein Kaliber, das auch ausschliesslich bei den Olympischen Sommerspielen für die Gewehrdisziplinen neben dem Luftgewehr Verwendung findet. Diese Kleinkalibergewehre sind verhältnismässig schwer, nämlich bis zu 7,5 kg, und haben einen Zylinderverschluss mit seitlichem Kammerstengel, der beim Laden angehoben und zurückgezogen wird, um die Patrone von Hand in den Lauf einzuführen. Anschliessend wird der Verschluss vorgeschoben und durch den seitlichen Kammerstengel, der nach unten gedreht wird, verriegelt. Nach der Umstellung auf Kleinkalibergewehre beim Biathlon wurde dieser Zylinderverschluss der Firma J. G. ANSCHÜTZ GmbH & Co. KG mit einer Mehrladeeinrichtung und einem 5-Schuss-Magazin ausgestattet und das Gewicht des Gewehres auf ca. 4,5 kg verringert. Der extrem leichte Schlagbolzen mit nur 4 mm langen Schlagbolzenweg verlieh diesem Sportgerät eine extrem kurze Schussentwicklungszeit von 4 ms, d.h. dass nach dem Auslösen des Schusses durch den Abzug das Geschoss nach 4 ms den Lauf verlassen hat. Für den Biathleten ist es von sehr grosser Bedeutung, dass das Geschoss so schnell wie möglich nach dem Auslösen des Schusses den Lauf verlässt, um Zielfehler zu reduzieren.
