| Description: |
| 22 long; 99% blue, excellent bore, very good stock, 18'' barrel, Also known as the Model 99, this is a single shot bolt action boys rifle with original blue finish and plain walnut stock fitted with the original plastic buttplate. This unique design eliminated the conventional trigger and guard commonly located on the bottom of the action. Instead the trigger was located behind the cocking piece and activated using the thumb when held at aim. Produced from 1904 through 1923 with just over 75,000 made. The top center of the barrel is marked with a two-line address and patent date AUG. 29, 1899, followed by "THUMB TRIGGER MODEL.-WINCHESTER/.22 SHORT AND LONG-TRADE MARK-". These markings do not quite jibe with those mentioned in the book "Winchester .22 Caliber Single Shot Rifle" by Herbert G. Houze, see pages 84-96. The book mentions a 1905 patent date and a different caliber marking, which do not appear on this example. The original blue finish has a few very minor handling marks, and remains bright. The stock has a few minor handling marks and has been altered with a carved out and smoothed area under the butt. There are also two filled holes on top of the wrist area behind the notch for the thumb trigger where it appears once a type of aperature sight may have been installed. Mechanically excellent., |
