| Extremely Rare Walther Experimental Type 1 "Simplified Sheet Metal" Double Action Pistol – From the Geoffrey Sturgess Collection An exceptional and historically significant piece, this Walther Type 1 experimental pistol represents one of the rarest German military sidearms of World War II. Developed by Walther in late 1943 to early 1944 at the request of the German weapons committee, the Type 1 was part of an effort to simplify production and reduce costs compared to the P.08 and P.38 pistols. It features a unique blend of manufacturing techniques, combining a machined steel slide with a stamped and pinned sheet metal frame—an early precursor to late-war Volkssturm weaponry. This design utilizes a rotating barrel locking system inspired by Josef Nickl’s patented mechanism and incorporates as many stamped components as possible to streamline production. Although the Type 1 and Type 2 prototypes were ultimately rejected, they paved the way for the even rarer Type 3, which saw extremely limited issue late in the war. The pistol is chambered for 9mm and accepts standard P.38 magazines. It features a blued finish, checkered walnut grips, and fixed sights. Markings are minimal, with only the Walther banner on the left side of the slide. This particular example remains in Very Good condition, with light edge wear and minor handling marks consistent with its age and rarity. This exact model is pictured in Walther: A German Legend by Manfred Kersten, pages 145–146, and comes from the renowned Geoffrey Sturgess collection. A must-have centerpiece for any serious collector of German military arms or rare WWII prototypes. Our import mark. |
