| 45-70 Government; very good bore, good stock, 32 5/8'' barrel, Rare trapdoor rifle variation, with most having been reworked to the 1888 pattern. Walnut stock with clear SWP/1886 cartouche on the left. The original metal finish has faded with mottled dark spotting overall. 1884 date casehardened breechblock with fading case color. Buttplate with trapdoor. Left side of the barrel is clearly marked with the V/P and eagleshead proof, with an additional P at the hump on the chamber. The top of the barrel chamber area is stamped with an "A". Crisp script cirlce P firing proof on the bottom of the grip. Buttplate tang US marked. Both blued iron barrel bands are U marked. Buffington rear sight with R marking. The wood is dark with small dings and dents, chip on the upper edge right side of the forend and a chip on the left side at the lower band. Otherwise the stock is solid with no major damage. The ramrod channel on the bottom of the forend has somewhat rounded edges. The action functions well, and the bore has shine and strong rifling, having a slightly frosted appearance., s/n 3196xx |
