Description:
16 Ga/9.9x47R; 90% blue, excellent bore, excellent stock, 28'' barrel, Manufactured circa 1894 in Germany and sold by Carl Stiegele of Munich, well known for his magnificent high quality guns of all types, likey no two the same. Mr. Stiegele was a dealer and was well connected politically and with German nobility, many of which purchased his guns, and he contracted with the finest gunmakers in Germany and hired highly skilled craftsman to build and embellish firearms. The browned damascus shotgun barrel has a 2.5 inch chamber with the choke gauging for Improved Cylinder, over which is a contrasting blued finish steel rifle barrel. The rib is smooth for approximately 8.5 inches up to the dovetailed rear sight, and is inlaid with the retailers name "C. Stiegele jun in Munchen" in gold, adjacent portions in ornate scrollwork gold inlay. The rib is matted for the remaining length to a small silver bead front sight. The casehardened action, backlock plates and trigger guard are all expertly and deeply relief engraved with floral leaf, the action having elk and deer scenes, the lockplates with dog and fox scenes. The trigger guard has a small squirrel, and flows into a horn grip with ornate horn tang. The hammers are engraved as well. The wedge held walnut forend is finely checkered with carved leaf pattern at the tip, a flor-de-lis leaf pattern at the back end. The break lever is horn capped with the steel backplate relief engraved. The walnut stock is decorated with elaborate and highly detailed relief carving as well, finely checkered wrist, with elk and fox at the end of the butt. The stock has an iron buttplate with trap, and is decorated with diamond shaped crosshatching, centered with tiny stars. Three quarter inch wide sling swivels are present on the bottom of the stock and barrels. The gun also features a tang mounted recessed flip up peep sight and adjustable trigger for the rifle barrel. This beautiful combination gun is in very fine overall condition. Some spotted areas in the blue finish on the rifle barrel, and a few minor handling marks on the stock. The frame, hammers, lock plates, trigger guard and buttplate have a pleasing silver/gray patina. This combination gun is an impressive example of fine German craftsmanship of the era., s/n 107xx
