| 44 Centerfire; 96% blue, very good+ bore, good grips, 8'' barrel, Manufactured 1863-1865. U.S. inspector marked with small letters M and W on most components and a faint cartouche on the left grip. This example has been converted for use with a 44 Caliber center fire cartridge post Civil War era. Many of these were converted with the advent of center fire cartridges, however this revolver does not have the common conversion notmally seen and was likely done by a gunsmith during the period and the quality of conversion is very good. The loading rod has been altered with a fixed rod installed to be used to eject cartridge from the cylinder. The revolver retains the original matching number cylinder having 12 notches. The usual conversions had a cylinder with 6 notches. The hammer has had a firing pin attached on the flat head. The dovetail under the end of the barrel for the original ramrod catch has been blocked. Original markings remain on the side of the frame, right side is marked "STARR'S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856" and the left side is marked "STARR ARMS CO. NEW. YORK.". Mechanically this revolver functions well and the bore is bright with sharp rifling, having a bit of fouling along the grooves. Antique., s/n 320xx |
