| This propeller was presented June 2, 1945 to retiring Base Commander Col. Frank H. Collins. It is signed by 115 officers of the 503rd AAF Base Unit stationed at Washington National Airport, Washigton D.C. This unit served basically the same duties that Air Force One does today. The month of June 1945 was the busiest for the 503rd as well as over four hundred VIPs passed through the base, including Harry S. Truman, Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley, George S. Patton Jr., Carl A. Spaatz, George C. Marshall, Brehon Somervell, Mr. Darryl F. Zanuck, and Mr. Jack Warner of Warner Somervell, Mr. Darryl F. Zanuck, and Mr. Jack Warner of Warner Bros Pictures. Some of the other accomplishments of the 503rd were: Record time from Moscow return to the United States. Major Ernest E. Dryer (Signee of the propeller) landed the first American plane in Berlin following it's capture by the Red Army. There are news articles and commendation letters about Captain Harold N. Learned who also signed the propeller. The propeller is said to be from a Japanese "Betty" Bomber with many supporting documents included., |
