Description:
8mm Mauser; 90% blue, very good bore, fair stock, 22'' barrel, Berlin Lubecker manufacture, marked on left side of receiver "K.43 qve 45". Eagle/214 proofed. Original blued finish, original laminated wood stock sanded, fabricated wood buttplate added, coat of varnish applied. Matching serial numbers including the original scope mount. Numbers and markings on wood gone due to sanding. Original front sight hood and cleaning rod. Original "aye" code marked 10-shot detachable magazine with 85% original black paint finish. Mechanically fine with a very good bright bore. Eagle/214 proofed scope mount, serial numbered and matching the rifle. ZF4 dow code marked scope, serial numbered 32641. Original rubber eyepiece attached with old epoxy and has hardened with age. Optics are fair, cloudy, and the top windage adjustment knob does not function properly. It appears the scope took a fall on top, denting one side of the housing. The original metal drum cover is present. Elevation adjustment functions fine. Includes the original leather sling, however the sling is torn, the pieces included for possible repair. Also includes an original SS issue Wehrpass book, named, with photo and hand written entries. Name is illegible, appears to be Ligismind. According to consignor notes, these items were sent home by the capturing GI with the rifle. Consignor supplied a background story with the rifle, quoted here: "The story of this rifle was told to me by my step Dad, who learned it from the original owner, his cousin, PFC Donald Kent.
In the last 6 or 7 weeks of the war, pfc. Donald Kent was a jeep driver for a colonel (unknown) and his aid (an unknown captain). While driving in Germany (location unknown), the sniper killed the colonel. The jeep stopped and pfc. Kent and the captain took cover behind the jeep. The captain used his .45 to draw fire and provide cover fire from behind the front tire and bumper while pfc. Kent evaded and maneuvered closer to the sniper. Kent and the captain took turns firing at the sniper to pin him down until Kent could get in range. Kent fired multiple .30 carbine rounds, eventually hitting the sniper. Kent moved closer and fired more rounds, resulting in the death of the sniper. The K.43 and the ID were taken from that sniper and eventually given to my step Dad, George Kent (A WW2 navy vet who served in the Pacific Theatre).
The rifle is mechanically fine. C&R/FFL, s/n 19xxc
