The primer is ringed in place and its annulus has a black or dark purple lacquer seal. The primer is ringed in. History note The L2A2 mark of 7.62 NATO was approved for UK service in September 1955, although production had started in February. The cartridge as originally adopted, based on the US T65E3 experimental case and the Belgian SS67 bullet, was given the nomenclature L2A1. This proved to have two problems: poor accuracy in some weapons (a problem solved not by changing the bullet diameter but by specifying tighter 7.52 mm barrels) and occasional case head separation in converted BREN light machine guns. A partially unsupported case head was inherent to the BREN design, and had been no problem in .303. It was therefore decided to thicken and strengthen the 7.62's case head, and this became the L2A2, which remained as the standard Ball round for UK forces. It was made by a variety of UK and foreign manufacturers, but a Greenwood & Batley example is rare, as the company made only one very small batch, all of which failed proof, so the Greenwood & Batley cartridges were never issued.
