Während des zweiten Weltkriegs konnte sie die bewährte Sten MKIII nicht verdrängen. Wie bei der Sten ist der Magazinschacht an der linken Seite angebracht. Dies bietet gewisse Vorteile beim Feuern im Liegen oder aus der Deckung. Anders als die Sten arbeitet die MK4 mit Kurvenmagazinen. Diese haben zudem Rollen statt verbiegbarer Kanten an den Magazinlippen. Da aufgrund des für den Spannhebel durchbrochenen Gehäuses die Schliessfeder offen liegt, wurde der Masseverschluss mit scharfkantigen Rillen versehen, die eindringenden Staub aufnehmen und Funktionsstörungen durch Verschmutzung verhindern. Die Sterling-MP gilt als überaus zuverlässig und robust. Sie wurde von der British Army bis in den 1990er-Jahren verwendet. Einige Spezialversionen gehören bis heute zum Reservebestand. Insgesamt wurden mehr als 400ยด000 Exemplare gebaut und in 70 Länder exportiert. |
